You Settled Your Road Tax in Minutes. Did You Spend That Long on Your Insurance?
Tips & Tricks | 02 Apr 2026

Road tax is easy. Car insurance is where the real protection starts.

If you can renew road tax online in minutes, it is tempting to stop there. But road tax is not the same as car insurance. In Malaysia, motor insurance is a legal requirement and it is what helps protect you from repair bills, medical costs and third-party liability after an accident. PIAM also notes that comprehensive cover can include optional add-ons such as windscreen coverage, all drivers coverage, Personal Accident, NCD Relief, key replacement cover and CART, depending on the policy.

That is why the smart move is to treat every car tax online renewal as a reminder to check your car insurance too. When you renew roadtax online, look at the cover type, sum insured, and whether your policy still matches how you actually drive. If you do long trips, especially during peak travel periods, emergency support and towing can matter just as much as the renewal itself.

What to check before you renew road tax

1) Make sure your insurance is still active

Your road tax renewal should sit on top of valid insurance, not replace it. PIAM states that motor insurance is legally required in Malaysia.

2) Check the coverage level

A basic policy is not the same as a comprehensive one. Comprehensive cover can extend to own-damage protection and optional benefits, depending on the insurer.

3) Look at your add-ons

If you regularly drive long distances or want fewer surprises after an accident, add-ons like windscreen cover, towing, and replacement-car support are worth reviewing.

4) Confirm your road tax details

MyJPJ app lets users check vehicle licensing details such as the LKM number and expiry date, and JPJ also provides an official LKM rate calculation guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is road tax the same as car insurance?

No. Road tax is the Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM). Car insurance is a separate requirement that provides financial protection.

2. Can I renew road tax online without checking insurance?

You should not. Motor insurance must be valid before you renew road tax.

3. What does MyJPJ show?

MyJPJ lets users check vehicle licensing details, driving licence expiry, and digital LMM/LKM display. It is currently for Malaysian citizens.

4. What should I do after a car accident?

If the situation permits, take photos, exchange details, and go to the nearest police station to file a report. Some policy wording also requires accident reports to be lodged within 24 hours.
