Thousands of Malaysians trust PolicyStreet for their car insurance renewal every year.

Yes. Every vehicle owner in Malaysia is legally required to have valid car insurance and an active road tax before driving on public roads. Both must be renewed annually to avoid fines, penalties, or legal action by JPJ.
Here's what you need to know:

  • Car insurance protects you financially in the event of accidents, theft, or damage
  • Road tax (Cukai Jalan) is a government-mandated fee that allows you to legally drive on Malaysian roads
  • You must renew your insurance first before road tax renewal can be processed
  • With PolicyStreet, you can renew both your car insurance and road tax in one place — saving you time and hassle

You can renew your car insurance up to 2 months before your policy expiry date — so there's no reason to wait until the last minute. Once your insurance is active, you can then proceed to renew your road tax.

Here's a quick guide on timing:

  • • Renew early — you can renew within 60 days before expiry, and your new policy period begins from your existing expiry date, not the date of renewal
  • Avoid late renewal — expired insurance or road tax can result in JPJ fines and you won't be allowed to drive until renewal is completed

No. Each vehicle must have its own individual insurance policy and road tax. A single policy cannot be shared or transferred between vehicles.
If you own multiple vehicles, you will need to renew each policy separately. With PolicyStreet, you can manage and renew insurance for all your vehicles easily in one place.

No. Car insurance only covers the specific vehicle stated in your policy. A car insurance policy cannot be used to make a claim for a motorcycle accident, and vice versa.
Each vehicle type requires its own separate insurance policy:

  • Car insurance — covers private vehicles such as sedans, SUVs, and MPVs
  • Motorcycle insurance — covers motorcycles and is a separate policy entirely

Driving without valid car insurance or road tax is illegal in Malaysia and can result in serious consequences:

  • Fines and penalties — you may be fined by JPJ or PDRM if caught driving with expired insurance or road tax
  • Vehicle impoundment — your vehicle may be seized until the issue is resolved
  • Invalid insurance claims — if you get into an accident while your road tax is not active, your insurer may not be able to process or honour your claim
  • Legal action — repeated offences can lead to further legal consequences

To avoid all of this, renew your car insurance and road tax on time. With PolicyStreet, you can renew both in one place before your expiry date.

Yes, you can. PolicyStreet allows both Malaysians and non-Malaysians, as company-registered vehicles, to renew car insurance online — as long as the vehicle is registered with JPJ and has valid details in the system, based on the car grant.
Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • Non-Malaysians — key in your vehicle registration number and passport number to get a quote
  • Company-registered vehicles — use your car plate number and your company registration number instead.
  • All vehicles must be registered with JPJ and have valid details in the system

If you need to make changes to your policy — such as adding a named driver, updating your address, cancelling your policy, or requesting a refund — you have two options:

Self-serve online:
Visit our endorsement portal at car.policystreet.com/endorsement and follow these steps:

  • 1. Enter your car plate and IC number
  • Select your endorsement type (e.g. add named driver, cancellation, extension)
  • Fill in the required details and attachments
  • Submit your request

No-Claim Discount (NCD) is a discount on your car insurance premium that rewards you for not making any claims during the policy year.

How NCD works:

  • For each claim-free year, your NCD increases
  • The longer you go without making a claim, the bigger your discount
  • NCD maxes out at 55%

NCD scale:
  • 1st year: 25%
  • 2nd year: 30%
  • 3rd year: 38.33%
  • 4th year: 45%
  • 5th year: 55%

You can check your current NCD via MyCarInfo using your IC and car plate number.

If you make a claim on your car insurance, your NCD will reset to 0% at your next renewal.

  • Your NCD only applies to the vehicle and owner it is tied to
  • If you are not at fault in an accident, you may get a claim from third-party to protect your NCD

This is why many drivers choose not to make small claims, to protect their NCD discount.

There are two main types of car insurance coverage in Malaysia:

Comprehensive Insurance:

  • Covers damage to your own vehicle caused by accident, fire, and theft
  • Also covers injuries and property damage to third parties
  • Recommended for newer or higher-value vehicles

Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT):
  • Covers damage to another driver's car or property
  • Covers fire damage or theft of your car
  • Does NOT cover damage to your own vehicle in an accident
  • Typically cheaper than comprehensive coverage

If your car is under 15 years old, you are eligible for Comprehensive coverage. For cars above 15 years old, normally only TPFT is available, depending on insurers.

You can customise your car insurance policy with the following add-ons:

  • Windscreen Coverage — covers repair or replacement of your windscreen
  • Additional Named Driver — covers other drivers who use your vehicle
  • Legal Liability to Passenger (LLTP) — covers you if a passenger sues you for injuries
  • Legal Liability of Passenger (LLOP) — covers you for damage caused by your passenger
  • Strike, Riot & Civil Commotion (SRCC) — covers damage from civil unrest
  • Waiver of Betterment — exempts you from paying extra for original parts on older vehicles
  • Compensation for Assessed Repair Time (CART) — reimburses alternative transport costs during repairs

Purchase / Renewal of Car Insurance

Yes. You can renew car insurance on behalf of a family member or someone else, as long as you have the following details ready:

  • Vehicle registration number (car plate)
  • Owner's IC number (MyKad)
  • Owner's contact details — email or phone number, needed for both quotation and policy delivery

Simply enter these details during the renewal process on PolicyStreet, compare quotes, and complete the payment. The policy and cover note will be sent to the email provided during the quotation process.

Yes, you can renew with the same insurer every year — but it's worth comparing your options first. Insurance premiums and benefits can vary from year to year, and switching insurers could save you money without affecting your coverage.

That's exactly why PolicyStreet exists — to help you compare quotes from multiple top insurers in one place, so you can make an informed decision every renewal season. You might find a better rate, better coverage, or both.

Yes, you may cancel your car insurance policy before it expires. Common reasons for cancellation include:

  • Selling your vehicle — your policy should be cancelled once ownership is transferred
  • Incorrect plan purchased — for example, if you require an e-hailing policy instead of a standard private car policy, or any other coverage change that requires a fresh policy

Refund policy:
Refunds are usually prorated based on the remaining coverage period. This means the longer your policy has been active, the lower your refund amount will be.

To request a cancellation, contact our customer support team at 018-282 2320 or customerservice@policystreet.com for assistance.

No. A valid and active car insurance policy is mandatory before road tax renewal can be processed. This is a legal requirement in Malaysia — JPJ will not allow road tax renewal without valid insurance.

Yes. Outstanding summons do not affect your car insurance renewal. You can proceed with your insurance renewal as usual regardless of any outstanding summons.

No, you cannot renew your road tax if you have outstanding summons — because outstanding summons will cause you to get blacklisted by JPJ/PDRM, which will block your road tax renewal entirely.

To check and pay your summons:

  • JPJ summons — check via MySikap or the myJPJ app
  • PDRM summons — check via MyBayarSaman

We offer 7 payment methods for your convenience:

  • Debit Card or Credit Card (Visa/Mastercard)
  • Online Banking (FPX) — Maybank2U, CIMBClicks, and more
  • e-Wallet — Grab, Boost, Touch 'n Go, ShopeePay, and more
  • GrabPay / Grab PayLater — 4-month instalment plan, T&Cs apply
  • ShopeePay / SPayLater — T&Cs apply
  • Atome — T&Cs apply
  • Easy Payment Plan (EPP) — credit card instalment, available with selected banks
  • Ahapay — T&Cs apply

To renew your car insurance on PolicyStreet, you'll need:

  • Vehicle registration number (car plate)
  • Owner's IC number (MyKad) or passport number for non-Malaysians
  • Owner's contact details (email and phone number)

In some cases, your insurer may request additional documents such as:
  • Vehicle photos — if your policy has lapsed or there are changes to coverage
  • Car grant (geran) — for EV or new cars or if vehicle details need verification

If your car insurance lapses (expires without renewal), here's what happens:

  • You are no longer covered — any accidents, theft, or damage will not be claimable
  • You cannot renew your road tax until your insurance has been renewed
  • Driving without valid insurance is illegal in Malaysia and can result in fines and legal action
  • Your insurer may require vehicle photos before reinstating a lapsed policy

If your policy has lapsed, renew it as soon as possible via PolicyStreet to restore your coverage.

Yes. Your NCD is tied to you as the vehicle and policyholder. This means:

  • If you sell your car and buy a new one, you can transfer your NCD to the new vehicle
  • If you own multiple cars, your NCD applies separately to each vehicle
  • NCD cannot be shared between two vehicles at the same time

To transfer your NCD, inform PolicyStreet or your insurer when renewing your policy for the new vehicle.

The best insurer depends on your individual needs, vehicle type, and budget. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Premium price — compare quotes from multiple insurers to find the best rate
  • Coverage — check what is included in the base policy and what requires add-ons
  • Claims process — consider the insurer's reputation for processing claims efficiently
  • Add-ons available — some insurers offer more customisation options than others

With PolicyStreet, you can compare quotes from multiple top insurers in one place — making it easy to find the best option for your needs.

Claims

Yes, you may still file a car insurance claim even if your driving licence has expired, as long as your insurance policy and road tax is active and valid at the time of the accident.

However, please note:

  • Expired driving licence — your claim can still be processed, but your insurer may take this into account during assessment, which may result in penalties
  • No driving licence at all — if you do not possess a driving licence, your claim is going to get rejected
  • Expired road tax — this is a separate matter. If your road tax is not active at the time of the accident, your claim will get rejected

If your road tax has expired at the time of the accident, your claim will get rejected by the insurer. This is why it is important to ensure your road tax is always kept active and up to date.

Please note that car insurance and road tax are two separate things:

  • Your insurance policy remains active regardless of your road tax status
  • Your claim eligibility however, may be affected if your road tax is not active at the time of the accident

To avoid any complications with your claim, always ensure both your car insurance and road tax are renewed on time.

If you've been involved in an accident, here's what you need to do to make a car insurance claim:

  1. Stay calm and ensure safety — move to a safe location and check for injuries
  2. Call the police — a police report is mandatory for all accident claims
  3. Document the scene — take photos of the damage and exchange details with the other driver (name, IC number, car plate, insurance details)
  4. Report to your insurer — notify your insurer as soon as possible after the accident
  5. Send your car to a panel workshop — your insurer will advise on the nearest authorised panel workshop for repairs
  6. Submit your documents — provide your police report, photos, and any other required documents to your insurer to support your claim

Need help with your claim? Contact our customer support team at 018-282 2320 or customerservice@policystreet.com and we'll guide you through the process.

File a police report and submit a third-party claim to the at-fault driver's insurer. Some insurers also assist with third-party claim handling.

The time it takes to process a car insurance claim varies depending on the complexity of the case and the insurer. Here's a general guide:

  • Minor claims (e.g. windscreen, minor dents) — typically resolved within a few days
  • Standard accident claims — usually take 2–4 weeks
  • Complex claims (e.g. total loss, disputed liability) — may take longer depending on investigation required

To speed up your claim, ensure you submit all required documents promptly, including your police report, photos, and any supporting evidence to your insurer.

A panel workshop is a car repair workshop that is authorised and approved by your insurance company. Here's what you need to know:

  • If you use a panel workshop, your insurer pays the repair costs directly to the workshop — you don't need to pay upfront
  • If you use a non-panel (own) workshop, you may need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement from your insurer — and the amount reimbursed may be lower
  • Using a panel workshop is recommended for a faster and smoother claims process

Below are the panel workshop list and roadside assistance number from our partner insurers:
  1. Generali Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1800-22-2262
  2. Zurich Takaful Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1-300-88-5566
  3. Takaful Ikhlas Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1800-88-1186
  4. MSIG Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1-300-880-833
  5. Allianz Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1800-22-5542
  6. Takaful Malaysia Panel Workshop — Roadside Assistance: 1800-888-788

If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, here's what you can do:

  • If you have Comprehensive coverage — you can make a claim under your own policy for damage to your vehicle
  • If you only have TPFT or Third Party coverage — you may not be covered for damage to your own vehicle
  • In both cases, you should still file a police report and notify your insurer
  • You may also pursue a civil claim against the uninsured driver directly, though this can be a lengthy process

This is one of the key reasons why Comprehensive coverage is recommended.

Yes, if you have Comprehensive coverage, you can make a claim even if the accident is your fault. Your insurer will cover the cost of repairs to your own vehicle, subject to your policy terms and any excess/deductible.

However, please note:

  • Making a claim will affect your NCD — your discount will reset to 0% at the next renewal
  • If the accident involves a third party, your insurer will also handle the third party claim on your behalf
  • If you only have Third Party or TPFT coverage, you cannot claim for damage to your own vehicle if you are at fault

An excess (also called a deductible) is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket before your insurer covers the rest of your claim.

For example:
If your repair costs RM3,000 and your excess is RM300, your insurer pays RM2,700 and you pay RM300.

Things to know about excess:

  • Compulsory excess — set by your insurer and cannot be waived
  • Voluntary excess — you can choose a higher excess in exchange for a lower premium
  • Young or inexperienced drivers may have a higher compulsory excess applied

Check your policy document for the exact excess amount that applies to your coverage.

Your vehicle may be blacklisted by MyJPJ due to several reasons, such as outstanding summonses, failure to attend investigations, or not providing required information as requested by JPJ. It is advisable to resolve any pending issues, such as paying fines or attending JPJ offices, to clear the blacklist.

Road Tax

Road tax (Cukai Jalan) is a mandatory annual fee imposed by the Malaysian government on all registered vehicles. It is proof that your vehicle is legally allowed to be driven on Malaysian public roads.

Here's what you need to know about road tax:

  • Legal requirement — every vehicle must have valid and active road tax to be driven on public roads
  • Renewed annually — road tax is typically valid for 12 months, though certain vehicles may opt for a 6-month renewal
  • Insurance first — you must have a valid car insurance policy before road tax renewal can be processed
  • Consequences of expired road tax — driving with expired road tax is illegal and may result in JPJ fines, vehicle impoundment, and potential complications with insurance claims

With PolicyStreet, you can renew your car insurance and road tax together in one simple step.

Road tax is typically valid for 12 months. However, certain vehicles may be eligible for a 6-month renewal instead.

Here's a general guide:

  • Private vehicles — typically renewed annually for 12 months
  • E-hailing vehicles — renewal period may differ depending on your EVP (E-hailing Vehicle Permit) expiry date; e-hailing road tax can only be renewed at JPJ
  • 6-month renewal — if your insurance policy has been active for more than 14 days, we are unable to process a full 12-month road tax renewal. In this case, we will renew your road tax for 6 months first. Once that expires, you will need to return to extend your policy in order to renew your road tax for another 6 months

You can renew your road tax together with your car insurance on PolicyStreet before your expiry date.

Road tax rates in Malaysia are calculated based on several factors:

  • Engine capacity (cc) — for petrol and diesel vehicles; higher cc means higher road tax
  • Power output (kW) — for electric vehicles, road tax is calculated based on power output in kilowatts instead of engine capacity
  • Vehicle type — private or commercial, and saloon or non-saloon body type
  • Region — rates differ between West Malaysia and East Malaysia

Yes. You do not need your physical vehicle registration card (geran) to renew your road tax. As long as your vehicle data is active in the JPJ system and you have a valid car insurance policy, you can proceed with renewal.

You can renew your road tax easily online via PolicyStreet — together with your car insurance in one simple step, anytime and anywhere.

Road tax in Malaysia is now fully digital. Here's what you need to know:

Digital Road Tax (e-LKM):

  • All road tax is now stored digitally via the MyJPJ app — no physical sticker or slip required
  • Can be renewed online through PolicyStreet or at a JPJ counter
  • Save a screenshot on your phone for reference in areas without internet connectivity

Important note:
For vehicles owned by non-Malaysians and company registered vehicles, JPJ will still continue to issue physical road tax.

Renewing your road tax late comes with serious consequences. Here's what you need to know:

  • It is illegal to drive with expired road tax — you are prohibited from driving your vehicle until renewal is completed
  • JPJ fines and penalties — you may be fined if caught driving with an expired road tax
  • Insurance claim complications — if you get into an accident while your road tax is expired, your insurer may not be able to process or honour your claim
  • 6-month renewal may apply — if your insurance policy has been active for more than 14 days, we are unable to process a full 12-month road tax renewal. In this case, we will renew your road tax for 6 months first. Once that expires, you will need to return to extend your policy in order to renew your road tax for another 6 months

To avoid all of this, renew your road tax on time. With PolicyStreet, you can renew your car insurance and road tax together before your expiry date — quickly and conveniently.

Yes. A valid and active car insurance policy is mandatory before road tax renewal can be processed — this is a legal requirement in Malaysia.

You cannot renew your road tax if:

  • Your car insurance has expired
  • Your car insurance has been cancelled
  • You do not have an active insurance policy

With PolicyStreet, you can renew your car insurance and road tax together in one simple step — ensuring you're always legally covered on the road.

EV road tax in Malaysia is no longer free. Starting January 1, 2026, a new power-based road tax structure applies to all electric vehicles.

Here's what you need to know:

  • How it's calculated — EV road tax is calculated based on motor power output in kilowatts (kW), not engine capacity (cc) like petrol cars

You can check your road tax status anytime via the MyJPJ app on your smartphone. Your road tax status is stored digitally and updated in real time.

Road tax rates in Malaysia vary based on several factors including engine capacity (cc), fuel type, vehicle type, and region. Here's a general guide:

Petrol/Diesel Cars (Private, Saloon, Peninsular Malaysia):

  • Up to 1,000cc: RM20/year
  • 1,001–1,200cc: RM55/year
  • 1,201–1,400cc: RM70/year
  • 1,401–1,600cc: RM90/year
  • 1,601–1,800cc: Progressive rates apply

Electric Vehicles (from 1 Jan 2026):
Rates are based on motor power output (kW). Starting from RM70/year for vehicles up to 100kW.

Yes, you can cancel your road tax before your road tax expires after you sell your car. You will need to submit a cancellation application letter along with supporting documents such as a copy of your vehicle registration certificate and driver's license. Please visit your nearest JPJ counter for further information on this process.

Here's how to proceed:

  • Cancel your road tax by visiting a JPJ branch
  • Provide proof of vehicle sale (e.g. transfer of ownership documents)
  • The refund amount will be calculated based on the remaining months of validity

Note: Road tax refunds are processed by JPJ, not by PolicyStreet. For assistance, contact our customer support team at 018-282 2320.
