Car Insurance for Foreigners: What You Should Know
Guides | 03 Oct 2026

Car Insurance for Foreigners in Malaysia

If you're new to Malaysia and need to insure a car, the fastest way to start is getting a clear quote and finding out what documents your insurer needs upfront — this saves you from delays when it's time to renew.

PolicyStreet's road tax calculator and car insurance calculator lets you get quotes and renew your policy in one place, without having to visit a branch or deal with multiple parties separately.

What Foreign Drivers Should Do Before Renewing

If you're an expat or foreign resident, don't just ask for a quote — ask for the full document checklist first. Insurers may need extra proof to recognise your driving history properly, especially if you're new to the country or switching from a foreign licence.

Before requesting a quote, it generally helps to have ready:

  • Your current vehicle registration details

  • Your previous policy documents, if you've insured in Malaysia before

  • Any proof of a claim-free record, if applicable

The exact document list can vary by insurer and by your visa/residency status. Confirm the specific checklist with your chosen insurer or with JPJ before you finalise anything.

What Is NCD?

NCD (No Claim Discount) is a discount on your motor insurance premium, given when you don't make a claim during your policy year. The rate follows a fixed scale: it starts at 25% after one claim-free year and rises to a maximum of 55% after five consecutive claim-free years.

In plain terms: the longer you go without a claim, the cheaper your renewal gets.

Can You Transfer NCD?

NCD is tied to you as the policyholder, not to a specific car. So, it generally cannot be transferred to another person. It can move with you between vehicles, as long as:

  • Both vehicles are registered under the same owner, and

  • They're in the same vehicle class (e.g. private car to private car)

This usually goes through your insurer's official NCD transfer/endorsement process, so it's worth confirming the steps with your specific insurer rather than assuming it's automatic.

Drive+ Can Make Renewal Easier

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is NCD in car insurance?

NCD is a claim-free discount on your motor insurance premium, set under PIAM's motor tariff. The longer you go without a claim, the higher the discount — up to 55%.

2. Can I transfer NCD to another car?

Yes, if the new car is under the same owner and the same vehicle class, through your insurer's official transfer process. NCD cannot be transferred to a different person.

3. Can I get a car insurance quote in Malaysia as a foreigner?

Yes. You can request a quote online or through an insurer, then follow the document checklist they provide. This can vary depending on your residency status, so confirm directly with your insurer.

4. Does NCD always stay the same after a claim?

No. A claim resets your NCD to 0% at the next renewal, and your premium goes up accordingly.

5. Is Drive+ the same as a discount campaign like Save Kaw Kaw?

No. Drive+ is a paid membership with ongoing rewards, while Save Kaw Kaw is a separate, time-limited discount campaign. You can usually benefit from both, but terms and stacking rules should be checked at checkout.

The benefit(s) payable under eligible certificate/policy/product is(are) protected by PIDM up to limits. Please refer to PIDM’s TIPS Brochure or contact Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad or PIDM (visit www.pidm.gov.my).
