Moved from Sabah or Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia (or the other way around)? Then your car insurance renewal and road tax may not be as straightforward as you think.
This guide explains the road tax difference and how to renew your road tax and/or car insurance for car owners in East Malaysia.

Road tax (LKM) is regulated by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Renewal conditions — active insurance, passing a PUSPAKOM inspection where required, and not being blacklisted — are the same nationwide.
What differs by region is the rate. Sabah and Sarawak have historically been charged lower LKM rates than Peninsular Malaysia, reflecting the region's road infrastructure and terrain. For example, a 2,000cc private saloon typically costs around RM380/year in Peninsular Malaysia versus roughly RM270–280/year in Sabah or Sarawak — the exact gap widens for bigger engines.
Always check the current rate for your exact cc on the MyJPJ app, as this can be revised.
Every vehicle is registered with a "declaration area" (Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, or Sarawak), which sets your road tax rate.
If your car was registered in Sabah or Sarawak but is now used long-term in Peninsular Malaysia (or vice versa), you can't just keep renewing at the old rate indefinitely. A vehicle moved to the peninsular can keep using its East Malaysian road tax for about 3 months, after which you're expected to switch to the peninsular rate (paying the pro-rated difference). Continuing to run on the cheaper rate past that point can be treated as an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987.
If you're renewing in a declaration area where the rate is lower than your vehicle's original area, you must formally change your declaration area before JPJ will process the renewal.
JPJ's official LKM renewal guide lists the documents needed at a JPJ counter for vehicles tied to Sabah, Sarawak or the duty-free islands:
MyKad or representative's ID
Vehicle declaration area certificate (if your usage location has changed)
Customs Declaration (K3) or port receipt
If you're renewing fully online (e.g. through MyJPJ or an insurance platform) rather than at a JPJ counter, confirm with JPJ or your platform whether these extra documents are needed — this list is specifically for the physical counter process.
Update your declaration area first, if it's changed
Renew your motor insurance
Renew your road tax
JPJ only allows road tax renewal within 2 months of expiry — not earlier — so don't try to renew too far in advance.
