What Happens if You Let Your Car Insurance Expire? Real Consequences in Malaysia
Tips & Tricks | 28 May 2026

What Happens If Your Car Insurance Expires in Malaysia?

We’ve all been there: life gets busy, and that small digital road tax in your MyJPJ app slips your mind. An expired insurance policy can create significant financial and administrative consequences, making timely renewal an important part of responsible vehicle ownership.

1. Administrative and Enforcement Risks

Driving without valid road tax is illegal and can result in JPJ fines and vehicle impoundment. Expired insurance also leads to claim rejection if an accident occurs. Keeping your insurance active helps you avoid unnecessary administrative issues and potential legal consequences.

2. The Cost of Losing Your NCD

Your No Claim Discount (NCD) is a reward for claim-free driving and can significantly reduce your premium.

NCD is reset to 0% at the next renewal when a claim is made. As a result, you may end up paying almost double the premium you were originally paying when your NCD was at 55%.

Therefore, most drivers prefer to explore alternatives to making a claim in order to protect their NCD discount rate.

3. Financial Exposure Without Valid Insurance

If your road tax has expired at the time of an accident, the insurer may reject the claim. Additionally, driving with expired insurance or road tax is illegal and can result in JPJ fines and vehicle impoundment.

Comprehensive insurance covers both your own vehicle damage and third-party liabilities. Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT) covers third-party damage/property, fire, and theft, but not your own vehicle damage in an accident. Third Party only covers third-party damage/injury.

4. Legal Consequences

Driving without valid insurance results in penalties under applicable laws and regulations. Because legal requirements and enforcement practices can change, motorists should refer to official government sources or seek professional advice for the most current information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my car insurance lapses?

If your car insurance lapses (expires without renewal), here's what happens:

  • You are no longer covered

  • You cannot renew your road tax until your insurance has renewed

  • Driving without valid insurance is illegal in Malaysia and can result in fines and legal action

  • Your insurer may require vehicle photos before reinstating a lapsed policy

If your policy has lapsed, renew it as soon as possible via PolicyStreet to restore your coverage.

Should I update my sum insured every year?

Yes. Car values depreciate annually, so updating your sum insured ensures accurate coverage. Over-insuring won’t increase your claim payout, while under-insuring can reduce your compensation due to the average clause.

How long before my NCD expires in Malaysia?

If your policy lapses for 12 months, your NCD will drop one tier progressively. For example, 55% NCD becomes 45%, 45% becomes 38.33%, and so on. A full NCD reset to 0% only happens when a claim is made on your policy.

Can Drive+ help with insurance renewals?

Yes. Drive+ membership from PolicyStreet enhances your renewal with benefits like road tax savings, priority assistance, and exclusive partner perks, helping reduce overall ownership costs. Learn more about the renewal process and explore more benefits at Drive+ Terms and Conditions.

Can I cancel my car insurance before it expires?

Yes, you can cancel your car insurance policy before it expires. Refunds are usually prorated based on the remaining coverage period. This means the longer your policy has been active, the lower your refund amount will be.

To request a cancellation, contact our customer support team at 018-282 2320 or customerservice@policystreet.com for assistance.

The benefit(s) payable under eligible certificate/policy/product is(are) protected by PIDM up to limits. Please refer to PIDM’s TIPS Brochure or contact Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad or PIDM (visit www.pidm.gov.my).
