Car Insurance for Foreigners: What You Should Know
Guides | 07 Apr 2026

Car Insurance for Foreigners in Malaysia

If you are new to Malaysia, the first step is to get a clear insurance quote and confirm what documents your insurer needs. PolicyStreet now offers an all-in-one road tax and car insurance calculator, so you can get quotes and renew your policy directly without needing to go elsewhere.

This makes it easier to compare car insurance and auto insurance options before you renew.

What Is NCD?

NCD means No Claim Discount. It is a motor insurance premium discount given to policyholders who have not made a claim during the previous policy year, and it can reach a maximum of 55% after five claim-free years. In plain terms, a clean driving record can lower your next premium.

Can You Transfer NCD?

In Malaysia, NCD is personal to the policyholder and is generally not transferable to another person. It can, however, be transferred between vehicles owned by the same person, subject to the insurer’s process. Insurer FAQs also state that NCD can move when you renew, and when you replace one car with another under the same ownership.

What Foreign Drivers Should Do Before Renewing

If you are an expat or foreign resident, the safest approach is to ask for the document checklist before you buy. A simple quote request is not enough if you want the insurer to recognise your driving history properly. For a smoother renewal, keep your previous policy documents, any claim-free proof you have, and the details of your current vehicle ready when you ask for the quote. This is especially important if you are trying to maximise your ncd transfer position or preserve your existing ncd history.

Drive+ Can Make Renewal Easier

PolicyStreet’s Drive+ Membership is a loyalty and rewards programme organised by Polisea Sdn. Bhd. (PolicyStreet). The current tiers are Lite with road tax discount capped at RM50, Standard capped at RM90, and Premium capped at RM120. Eligible members can also get EPP/Atome discounts, waived road tax handling fees, priority support for car insurance renewals, and more!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is NCD in car insurance?

NCD is a claim-free discount on your motor insurance premium. The longer you go without a claim, the higher the discount can be.

  1. Can I transfer NCD to another car?

Yes, if the new car is under the same owner and the insurer approves the transfer process. NCD is not meant to be transferred to another person.

  1. Can I get a car insurance quote in Malaysia as a foreigner?

Yes. You can request a quote online or through an insurer, then follow the document checklist they provide.

  1. Does NCD always stay the same after a claim?

No. NCD is tied to claim history, so a claim can affect your discount at the next renewal depending on the policy outcome.
