Why Car Insurance Claims Are Rising in Malaysian Cities

Why Car Insurance Claims Are Rising in Malaysian Cities

In many Malaysian cities, traffic congestion has become a daily reality. As urban populations grow and more vehicles fill the roads, accident risks are increasing, and also are insurance claims.

While not every accident leads to serious injuries, the frequency of minor collisions in busy urban areas can contribute to rising insurance claims and higher repair costs over time.

More Cars on the Road

One of the biggest factors is simply the increasing number of vehicles on the roads.

Malaysia records hundreds of thousands of road accidents annually, with estimates suggesting over 500,000 accidents occur each year across the country.

With more vehicles sharing limited road space, the likelihood of accidents naturally increases, especially in dense urban environments such as Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley.

Traffic Congestion in Urban Areas

Cities like Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, and other parts of the Klang Valley experience some of the highest traffic volumes in Malaysia.

The Klang Valley alone has around 9 million residents, making it one the country’s most densely populated metropolitan areas.

High traffic density leads to common accident scenarios such as:

  • Rear-end collisions in stop-and-go traffic

  • Lane-change accidents during peak hours

  • Minor parking collisions in crowded areas

Even when these incidents cause only small damages, they can still result in insurance claims.

Minor Accidents Add Up

While major accidents receive the most attention, minor accidents actually make up a large portion of insurance claims.

Low-speed collisions, such as bumper knocks or parking scratches are common in congested city traffic. Over time, these smaller incidents contribute significantly to the number of claims insurers process each year.

According to reports, Malaysia averages around 1,700 road accidents daily, highlighting how frequently such incidents occur.

Rising Repair Costs Increase Claim Value

Another reason claims appear to be rising is the increasing cost of vehicle repairs,

Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced technology such as sensors, cameras, and driver-assistance systems.

As repair bills increase, insurance claims may also become larger in value.

Managing Insurance Costs

With accident risks and repair costs increasing in busy cities, reviewing insurance coverage during renewal becomes even more important.

PolicyStreet’s 10+10 promo offers 10% off your insurance premium (after NCD), plus and additional RM10 off at checkout when you renew between  10-11AM or 10-11PM  from the 1st to the 24th of the month

Taking advantage of these renewal windows can help drivers manage insurance costs while staying properly protected.

Why Driving Habits Still Matter

Despite growing congestion, safe driving habits remain one of the most effective eways to reduce accident risks.

Drivers can lower their chances of filing a claim by:

  • Maintaining safe following distances

  • Avoiding sudden lane changes

  • Staying alert during peak traffic hours

Practising defensive driving also helps protect your No Claims Discount (NCD), which can significantly reduce insurance premiums over time.

Important To Keep in Mind

Urban traffic conditions in Malaysia are unlikely to improve overnight. With more vehicles on the road and increasing congestion, accident frequency in cities will likely remain a challenge.

Understanding these risks and staying mindful behind the wheel can help drivers reduce accidents, avoid unnecessary claims, and manage their long-term insurance costs more effectively.

In busy cities, even small driving decisions can make a big difference on the road.
